Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Covenant Commonly Called the Old Testament, Vol. 1 of 2: Translated From the Septuagint It is called in the title-page, The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Covenant, commonly called the Old and New Testa ment: Translated from the Greek by Charles Thomson, late Secretary to the Congress of the United States. Philadelphia. Printed by Jane Aitkin, No. 71, North Third Street. 1808. 4: vols. (one being of the New Testament). That a work of such importance as the Septuagint should be so little known and so little appreciated as not to call for more than one other translation of it into English,6 is a matter for considerable surprise when it is remembered that not only has the Authorized Version of our English Bible been under Obligation to it, but that the New Revisionists have corrected their text by it too, and at the same time have expressed their opinion that some of its readings are based on manuscripts evidently of a much earlier date than any existing Hebrew mss. (see their Preface). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
