While the condition of the heart before this illness is not certainly known, he had never shown any symptoms of cardiac trouble, and had had no previous rheumatism, scarlatina, or other of the diseases likely to produce endocarditis. The progressive addition of signs of recent endopericarditis tends to strengthen the probability that the whole process was of recent origin, and was an immediate result of the throat trouble.
