Book Synopsis Modeling Polymer-colloid Phase Behavior by : Naa Larteokor Quarcoo
Book excerpt: Here, we investigate the phase behavior of silica colloids in solution with two uncharged polymers, polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), with the values of Rg/R = 0.7 and 1.8 for each polymer. The four observed phase boundaries are related to the polymer characteristics of Rg and entanglement concentration (c*). The polymer properties were characterized by viscometry, light scattering and size exclusion chromatography. The experimental observations suggest that phase separation depends on the ratio of the polymer concentration to the entanglement concentration for a given polymer.
