Book excerpt: Background: Periodization is a long-term approach for resistance training that involves pre-planned systematic variations in training specificity, intensity, and volume organized into periods within an overall training program. This approach has been shown to be a proven method to maximize benefits of the program however; the most effective form of periodization is still being debated. Purpose: The purpose of this review was to systematically identify and analyze previous studies that have directly compared Linear Periodization (LP) and Undulating Periodization (UP) resistance-training programs in men with previous resistance training experience. Methods: A systematic search of Concordia University’s library database Summons, SPORTDiscus, MEDLINE, PubMed, and The Journal of Strength and Conditioning online database resulted in 1,894 citations. After the initial search, those publications included were then limited to studies from a peer-reviewed journal with a link to full text. In addition, all studies needed to satisfy the inclusion criteria, which resulted in nine total publications being included in this review. Of the nine included studies, six were Randomized Control Trials (RTC’s) and three were Quasi-Experimental. Results: The results of this review demonstrate that both LP and UP resistance training programs can increase muscular strength considerably, but no definitive evidence favoring LP or UP was found. Conclusions: Based on this systematic review, strength and conditioning professionals can feel confident that incorporating either form of periodization into an athlete’s training program can help maximize training effects.
