Book excerpt: A Course in English Literature and Language is designed to be different from conventional courses in general English for undergraduate students. Each unit is based on a central theme and the texts cut across genres. A wide range of tasks challenging congnitive and linguistic abilities have been designed for each of the twenty-one texts in the book. Word, sentence and discourse level grammars have been discussed using examples from the reading texts and keeping in mind the mixed ability levels of learners. The prime objective of the book is to enable learners to acquire linguistic and communicative competencies with ease.
