Book excerpt: Vorne: "John Evans (1932-2012) was an American artist who lived most of his life on the lower east side of Manhattan. He was best known for his wonderful collages and his long membership in the International Mailart Network. In 1964, John started making one collage a day, every day. He continued this practice until December 31, 2000. After that date, he continued making collages for friends' birthdays and when inspiration struck.Throughout his life he was an avid collector of interesting scraps of paper, printed matter, photographs and small objects which he would find on the streets of his New York city neighborhood. After his passing John's widow, Margret Evans, gave several Los Angeles friends a large bag of material he had horded for future collages. I quickly decided that I would make a series of collages with my share from the bag, using only John's hand-picked papers and photographs. The only things I have added to these 35 collages are the watercolor paper base, a coffee wash background and a bit of watercolor and India ink here and there. As I was making these collages, I realized I needed more 'John Evans' material than I had saved in order to complete the series. A special thanks to John Tostado and D.C. Spaulding for generously sharing their stashes, which allowed me to complete the 35 collages and make some of the best work in this series."
