Book excerpt: Perth is very far away from almost everywhere. Though some aspects feel very familiar, its unique setting makes it impossible to draw a direct comparison with any other city on Earth. Its coastal perch, hot dry summers, penchant for digging deep holes, and thriving pub culture conjure elements of -- respectively -- Sydney, Phoenix, Houston & (insert any British city here) all rolled into one. In fact upon overhearing voices in some Perth bars you could be forgiven for thinking you actually are in a UK pub ...until of course you step outside into the blazing late afternoon sun and realise exactly why this city is such a huge draw for northern transplants. Although personally we prefer to spend our sunny days wandering straight from the train or bus into the nearest air-conditioned bar, in this volume we've made it a point to include within our pub tours some leisurely walks, open-air sights, and even a few breezy beaches. So come with us on a journey along some of Perth's finest train and bus corridors (+ a ferry) to experience some of Western Australia's top pubs, plus a few others you at least will never have otherwise stumbled upon.
