Book excerpt: This thesis consists of three chapters. In the first chapter, I investigate how promo-tion incentives affect the performance of high-skilled public employees. I study a centralized evaluation process awarding the eligibility for associate and full pro-fessorship in Italian academia, and show that the perspective of a promotion in-duces scholars to increase their research productivity. In the second chapter, I present the results from a laboratory experiment designed to assess whether and how financial literacy influences the way individuals perceive and evaluate finan-cial assets. By comparing participants' investment decisions under different treat-ments, I show that the lack of financial literacy lowers the subjective value that investors assign to risky financial assets. The third and last chapter is devoted to an empirical analysis of the link between university quality and employment opportunities. I find that postgraduate students who receive incentives to attend higher-ranked universities are more likely to be employed one year and a half after the end of their studies.
