Book excerpt: "Students receiving special education services for emotional disturbance (ED) present many challenges; however, social skill deficits are a defining characteristic of students with ED diagnoses. Social skills and self-regulation curriculum has the potential to not only allow students with ED to access their education and be emotionally available to learn, but it also provides a means of improving their social competence. This study examined the effectiveness of a trauma-informed, social skills and self-regulation intervention in increasing the self-regulation abilities of students with ED. A multiple baseline across behaviors, single-subject experimental design was utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. A visual analysis of graphed data indicated that students' abilities to identify feelings were positively affected through this intervention and that social skills training must be more individualized, frequent, and intense."--Abstract, p. 1.
