Book excerpt: Engagement matters, and it is critical for student success and for community college faculty and staff who are responsible for helping students learn and achieve their goals. It is particularly critical for community colleges to find ways to engage part-time faculty who are responsible for such a significant part of most students' college experiences. Through its surveys and focus groups, the Center for Community College Student Engagement listens systematically to students, faculty, and staff. The Center encourages colleges to do the same on their campuses--and to use what they hear to create conditions that lead to improved student learning, persistence, and completion. In this discussion guide, the Center provides information to support campus discussions, which are an important complement to data from the Center's student engagement surveys.
