Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Relics of Japanese Art, Vol. 5 Of the two sections here given, the first illustrates miracles which occured on Mount Hiyei. Onoe on a time, the high g priest of the Tendai sect, Kyoycn by namc (979 was reading the Vidya - matra-sastra, a treatise on Buddhist Idealism, in a hall on the Mount. The Deity of Kasuga, transforming himself into an old man, appeared before him, delighted to express his joy and respect at meeting him. He is further represented here as perfonninga dance, called the Manzairaku Joy of Ten Thousand Years on an old pine tree in the inclosure. The second relates to a meritorious priest, named Kyokwai (died in who, mcdi tating for three years in an upright attitude, while on the Otowa hill, Kyoto, prayed to be born in thc Land of Bliss. He then fell ill, owing to a disease of the legs, and not being able to stand any more, he prayed to the Deity of Kauga to cure his disease. Thereupon a lady appeared in a dream, and said to him a - I shall not abandon thee. My abode is in the West. Upon the delivery of that oracle he recovered from his illness.
