Book excerpt: The collection consists of an oral history interview with W. Herman Bell on October 10, 1974, a print transcript, interview questions, and an online version of the audiotape and the transcript. W. Herman Bell received a B.A. in Political Science from Old Dominion University and a law degree from the University of Virginia in 1976. He served as ODU's student representative on the Board of Visitors and a counselor and Professor of Counselor. Prior to his senior year at ODU he was appointed to the board as a regular member by Governor Holton. One of the big issues during the 1970's was the discussion of Shah of Iran wanting to put a naval training academy at Old Dominion. A number of faculty was opposed to the naval training academy. The faculty more than administration were concerned about the possibility of the academic controlled content of programs when a foreign government is involved.
