Book excerpt: Excerpt from Storage Reservoirs on Stony Creek, California Recognizing the fact that the general and permanent prosperity Of California is largely dependent upon successful agricultural develop ment, and furthermore that in the great central valleys Of the State farming without irrigation has caused, during the last decade, a decrease in land values, as well as in population, it was deemed desir able to investigate the possibilities Of irrigation development in certain typical interior districts Of the State. In the above connection the California Water and Forest Association requested the United States Geological Survey to make a study Of Glenn County to ascertain if suitable reservoir sites could be found on Stony Creek, so that the waters Of that stream could be put upon the higher and warmer mar ginal lands on the western side Of the Sacramento Valley. Willows is the county seat Of Glenn County, and the chamber Of commerce Of this town, through the Water and Forest Association, contributed $250 additional toward defraying the expenses Of this study. The field work has been entirely under the direction Of the Hydrographic Branch Of the Geological Survey, and the greater part of the expense has been borne by that Survey.
