Book excerpt: My particular hope is that this introductory book - for there are a number of more detailed, text-book type publications on this topic - will be useful to help those who want to teach more Biblically. This book is an invitation to the start of a journey. The journey involves recognising more clearly the nature of the world around us, and how we can test God's will for us as teachers, where-ever it is that we teach. The book focusses on the concept of character. Biblical character is defined by God offering His Grace when we did not and do not deserve it. We are therefore called to serve others by recognising this Grace in the teaching gift He gives to us (1 Peter 4:10-11). Such discerning wisdom is the key to staying faithful to this call, so our teaching is not reduced to an instructional formula or a controlling social-engineering program. The purpose of teaching as a Christian is to be an agent of Grace and Truth who invites others to grow up into Christ. This is the basis of true character for the Christian teacher.
